How to Prepare for Your Pet Sitter

If you are the proud owner of a dog or cat, getting a pet sitter is something which may be necessary. Some families or individuals need pet sitters while they work and others may need a dog sitter or cat sitter when they go away on vacation. If you find yourself in this situation, there are a few important items which you can do prior to selecting your pet sitter. Taking these necessary steps will make the transition much easier for you, your pet sitter and your dog and/or cat.

Have Your Pet and Pet Sitter Meet

Before you leave on vacation or start having your pet sitter look after your dog and/or cat, you should have the pet sitter come over and meet your family friend. This serves a few different, purposes. First, you can make sure that the pet sitter will treat your dog or cat well. You can test the rapport that your beloved pet has with the potential pet sitter. Secondly, you can use this time to have your pet get acclimated to their new cat sitter or dog sitter. Lastly, it simply provides a way for all three parties to get acquainted and make the transition go much more smoothly.

Make Lists for the Pet Care Professional

Another way to prepare for your dog sitter or cat sitter is to make a few lists for the pet care professional to utilize. One list should contain emergency contact numbers in case your pet requires some help, or emergency care, while under the supervision of the pet sitter. The list of numbers should include your work number, cell number, veterinarian number and any relatives or neighbors who may be able to come to the assistance of the pet sitter should you be unreachable. Another list should contain the important items which you want your pet sitter to take care of with regard to your pet: such as feeding, play time, medication, and any daily schedule which your dog or cat likes to follow. Both of these lists will help to ensure that your pet sitter is comfortable with his/her new role and that your pet is at ease with the new person in their lives.

Stock Up On Pet Necessities

You should also be sure to stock up on pet necessities so that your pet sitter is adequately prepared to care for your pet while you are not around and does not have to worry about running out to pick things up for your dog or cat. Items such as food, medications, toys and bath items should all be stocked and ready to be put to use at a moment’s notice.
